SICILY. Syracuse. Dionysios I, 405-367 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 16.82 g, 1 h), unsigned dies in the style of Eukleidas, circa 405-400. Charioteer driving quadriga galloping to left, holding the reins with his left hand and kentron in his right; above, Nike flying right, crowning the charioteer with a wreath; in exergue, dolphin swimming left. Rev. ΣΥΡAKOΣI[ΩN] Head of Arethusa to left, her hair bound with sphendone over which several tresses fly back; she wears a double hook earring and a plain necklace; around, three dolphins swimming downwards, one upwards. SNG ANS 296 (same dies). SNG Lloyd 1404 (same dies). Tudeer 92 (same dies). Beautifully toned and of excellent style. The obverse struck from the usual worn die, otherwise, good very fine.
